What Data Can You Enter and What to Focus on

Learn which data matters most for LCA in Pickler, how to handle missing data, and how defaults help you calculate impact with confidence.

Updated this week

Pickler’s Fast-Track LCA makes it easy to calculate the environmental impact of your packaging.

You can start your calculations in three ways:

  • Form – fill in product data directly in Pickler’s interface

  • Spreadsheet – import data in bulk for multiple SKUs at once

  • API – connect your ERP or database for automated data transfer

Data you can enter in Pickler

Pickler supports a wide range of product data. The data you can enter includes:

  • Materials composition, weights and printing

  • Processing methods, locations and energy use

  • Additional packaging (pack, case, pallet layers)

  • Transport distances & methods

  • End-of-life information

You can find all datafields in Pickler's full data model

It's very likely that you will not have all if this data available, and that’s completely fine. It's therefor good to know what data to focus on.

First, focus on your materials.

This is the most crucial data. Materials are often the largest share of the total impact and even more crucial; without it, a calculation can't be completed in Pickler.

You will need to enter your data as you find it in your ERP or bill of material. If you do not have this data available, you might need to request it from your supplier.

In Pickler, you need to enter the materials in grams.

For example:

  • paper | 85 g

  • LDPE | 15

Next, add other data that you have available

You can now focus on additional data that you might have. Usually, this is data on:

  • Additional packaging (inner pack, case, etc) used for distribution and pallet configuration, weights, pieces per case or pallet, etc

  • Transport type and distance from your supplier to your warehouse

  • Processing location (often your supplier's location)

  • End-of-life (where your product is sold)

  • Print (surface area, printing method)

Data that you can add, but most likely will not have available or have no evidence for:

  • Energy use and energy mix during processing

  • End of life scenario's

Still data gaps? Use Pickler's defaults

Pickler indicates what primary data is required to enable a calculation, with indicators in the product form sidebar and color codes in the spreadsheet.

You can opt in to let Pickler fill data gaps with temporary, conservative industry average defaults. Default values allow you to still calculate the impact. You can replace defaults later with primary data, once you have it available.

In short

You can calculate your product footprint even if not all data is available. Start with your materials, add what you know, and let Pickler safely fill the gaps. As your data improves, simply update the fields and your impact results will automatically become more accurate.
