2. Entering raw materials

Build up your product's Bill of Materials, by writing out your product's components and materials using your internal naming.

Step 1: Create components

Name your product's components.

Components are used to group materials and can best be defined as an individual assembled part of a package - such as any interior or exterior blocking, bracing, cushioning, weatherproofing, exterior strapping, coatings, closures, inks, lids and labels.

Packaging components have their own production locations. How you structure your components is up to you.

Step 2: Add materials per component

Option 1: Creating new, unmapped materials:

Look in your internal ERP system or ask your suppliers for a list of the materials in their product.

Simply write out the internal names you use for each material. Divide your materials per component.

The new materials will be mapped after you completed the whole product form.

Option 2: Using mapped materials:

In this case, Pickler's project owner already implemented all your internal materials in Pickler. You can search/choose from the material drop-down and select the material you're looking for.

You don't have to map the material afterwards.

Step 3: Add share/weight division

Fill in the share (%) or weight (gram/Mu/Gsm) for every component compared to the packaging's total weight.

Share is often automatically predicted by Pickler, but you can edit it yourself too.

It's crucial you fill this out as correctly as possible, for Pickler to determine the environmental impact of the individual materials.

About the material stage

In this stage, we calculate the part of the product's footprint that involves the extraction of the used materials and the logistics of getting the materials from the extraction site to the refining facility.
